Renee Tajima-Peña’s documentary, “No mas Bebes,” rediscovers the nearly forgotten shameful chapter of targeted forced sterilization in Los Angeles history. Many local Latina women found themselves sterilized without their consent, after having given birth at Los Angeles County Hospital in the ’60s and ’70s. Tajima-Peña interviewed the mothers, as well as doctors and lawyers involved with the civil lawsuit that followed, to piece together this painful chapter in Southern California’s recent past.

Monica Castillo spoke with director Tajima-Peña about the challenges she faced when bringing the story of “No mas bebes” back to light.
