Hollywood’s film scoring industry has historically been, and largely remains, a “boy’s club.” Excuses from numerous studio executives for this lack of diversity range from “Are there any female film composers?” to “Can a woman actually score a large action feature?”
However, thanks to the work of many women film composers, these flimsy justifications are beginning to be eliminated. In conversation with Mirabella McDowell, film music journalist Jon Burlingame and USC Film Scoring Master’s student Angela Little detail the challenges facing female film composers, as well as the progress being made to help these women gain more visibility.
